Endoscopy

Endoscopy is a useful tool when evaluating a horse for potential respiratory dysfunction.

The horse’s upper airway is extremely complicated anatomically.  Upper airway endoscopy is a great tool to evaluate the delicate structures of the nasal passage and upper airway, determine any anatomic or structural abnormalities, and potentially locate sources of abnormal respiratory noise.

It is important to note that some causes of respiratory noise may only be detectable while exercising, and this requires a dynamic respiratory exam – either on a specialized treadmill in a referral hospital setting, or with a dynamic endoscope that can be affixed to the bridle while the horse is working.  EVA has the capability to scope horses at rest.

In an upper airway endoscope, structures within both nasal passages, the nasopharynx, trachea, and guttural pouches may be evaluated.
